The importance of maintaining the HVAC air filter clean
Before we talk of different types of air conditioning filters and heating and what is best for you, it is necessary to stress how important it is to keep the air conditioning and heating clean filters. The airflow is very important for the efficiency of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and filters play a key role in maintaining adequate air flow. Whether your AC system or your heating system in both HVAC systems need adequate amounts of designed air flow throughout the system. Dirty filters restrict air flow resulting in higher energy and repair costs for you.
Filter Categories
There is a different definition, categories and ratings for HVAC filtering media. High Performance HVAC will do everything possible to take the confusion of this and help you better understand these different categories and grades so you can choose for yourself. First, HVAC filters are rated by a MERV value. MERV mean minimum efficiency and value information is a method developed by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) to test the effectiveness of HVAC air filters. The highest MERV number the higher the efficiency of the furnace filters from HVAC to block certain particles and compounds. There are three different categories for HVAC air filters. These are:
Mechanical Air Filters – This is the typical off-the-shelf and pull HVAC filter. This filter collects particles in its filter medium. After collecting so many particles simply remove it, throw it away and replaced. Note that some means of mechanical filtration are washable. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air filters) Also in this category. There are three sub-categories for mechanical air filters. These are:
A1 and A2 – these are standard filters 1 inch thick. These are typically rated MERV 1 to MERV 4.
B filter media are 2 to 4 inches thick. These filters typically range from MERV 1 to MERV 12.
C filter of the media represent HEPA filters. MERV ratings for these filters exceed MERV 13 and are the most expensive.
Electronic Air Cleaners – Electronic Air Filter not qualify for a MERV rating because its efficiency can change depending on how clean it is. It is important that electronic air cleaners are cleaned every two years (with more often in dusty environments) for best performance. In addition, they work best when used together with mechanical means of filtering.
Phase Gas Absorption – uses carbon to absorb odors and gases from the air stream. This medium is not very effective in removing particles and is used mainly in laboratories and industrial environments.
It is important to understand that the best mechanical filter is to filter the air faster load up (or become clogged particles). This can affect the performance of your computer and frequency of updates. Unless your house is free of dust particles and do not think the filter duration three months despite the filter manufacturers claims. It is also essential that the filter has the proper fit without air leaks around the frame that holds the filter.
Now that we understand the filters, how to work to remove particles from the air, and the different types and grades for filters, it is necessary to take measures to set up a filter intended to change the routine. It is recommended that filters at least be checked every 30 days to the overloading of particulates. If the filter is too charged in a thirty-day check then you need to shorten the period of 3 weeks or relax that schedule if not loaded. Some modern digital thermostats come with a reminder function filter that flash based on number of days or run-time fan. These thermostats help you remember to change or check your filter at regular intervals.
Finally, remember that filters are very necessary not only to keep the particles in the air inside the home but also to protect equipment. If you do not have a filter in the system or somewhere there is a filter that is too clogged the HVAC equipment will fail and you lose your HVAC system HVAC until corrective action is taken. Establish a schedule and stick to it to maintain its clean air and protected computer.
