What are negative ions? Are they good?

My grandmother has this "clean air" that has a button to "release negative ions. "If I have pressure on that button will do nothing good for the environment in which my grandmother is in?

usually in the science anyway, negative ions are particles with more electrons (-) than protons (+). ions always link with oppositely charged ions become Stabel (ie negative w / positive and vice versa), perhaps smelling air fresheners bonds positivly not mandated to make them smell bad?
