Air Cleaner Ionizer
Ionizer or Hepa air cleaner which removes smoke odors better ?
Hepa can only remove the smoke if the smoke reaches the hepa filter–can’t get smoke and smoke smell that lingers in nooks and crannies. A plain old Ionizer will only help in removing the visual smoke–it is a particulant. Again, both technologies are based on passive air purification–the air problem must make it way to these type of units in order for them to be effective.
The best answer for odors is active air purification, which is utilized by a FreshAir by Ecoquest. The molecules and oxidizers go out from the unit (which is the size of a small stereo speaker) like on a seek & destroy mission up to 3,000 sq. feet.
I know this because of an experience I had regarding the need to remove smoke odor: I had a faulty toaster that would not pop up the toast properly. My daughter put bread in it and then left the house forgetting about the toaster being on. When I go home 1 hour later, I walked in the house and saw a 4 foot high smoke layer in my kitchen with the toaster looking very red. To make a long story short, I put my FreshAir unit on high mode (sanitization), left the house for 2 hours. When I returned home, the visual smoke was gone and the smoke ordor was greatly dimished. The next day I ran the unit on high again for another 2 hours and after that, smoke odor was totally gone.
