Do you have a furnace has nothing to do with the ability to add central air?
I live in Colorado Springs, CO When I bought this house, I had the furnace check out by a type of HVAC. When I asked if I would be able to add central air to the house, I said something to the effect of "the furnace will to be replaced by a new one to add central air. "I wondered, since there are already vents throughout the house, does it really matter how old the furnace is? Is not A / C only blowing air through vents, not the oven? The house was built in 1968, and I suspect that the oven is probably the original brand is Lennox. However, in the oven that has a label that says you can add-on air conditioning, electronic air filter, etc. I have not received any appointment yet, so I do not have a second opinion, but if the summer of next year is something like this has been this year I'm going to need to do something for my house warm.
Two potential problems come to mind. With the heat only, there is a possibility that the existing furnace is not big enough fan to provide CFM needed to circulate air conditioning, which is heavier than warm air. Moreover, in many cases, the existing duct work may not be sufficient to move the required amount of air for each space. The only way to know for sure, however, is to have a Manual J (residential load calculation) and a Manual D (Residential Duct Systems) by a qualified HVAC technician.
