Question on Pet Odor and air vents?

We keep our litter box in the basement, where our unit is also HVAC. Never I had a problem with my 2 cats to accidents, but I could have found a scent in our new home and have spent a couple of times out of the box. Anyway, at any time the air or heat runs the entire house smells of cat – something I've never lived in 15 years of pet ownership – and I'm embarrassed. My husband has moved the litter box as far as possible from the unit and we had clean air vents. He even changed the filter and add a fragrance to it, but nothing seems function. Your next step is to drain the basement and completely scrub the walls and floors – is unfinished – either with vinegar or miracle of nature. Has anyone had a problem similar they may be able to share a solution with me?
