Carbon filters in air vents?

I am trying to greatly reduce the amount of smells in my in-laws basement to where we just moved. I know activated carbon is very effective at removing odors. I’ve never seen carbon air vent filters for the A/C vents that hang from the ceiling, so I was wondering if I took replacement pre-filters for air purifiers, or even fish tanks, and cut them to shape and put them behind the air vents if that would be effective? Thanks.

Yes you can, I would try one from an air purifier though so that way you can make sure there would be adequate air flow, if there isn’t then it would be just like having a clogged a/c filter.
