Air purifiers for odor elimination

As air cycles through the air cleaner, the CADR measures the volume of air actually moves through the system, and the percentage and size of particles being removed. CADR tests for pollutants like snuff smoke, dust and pollen. These tests determine, in cubic feet per minute (CFM), the efficiency of the air cleaner is at removing specific contaminants.

CADR results are recognized as accurate and fair measures of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Lung Association. Although some manufacturers use the air exchange rate to describe their air filters, is not comparable to CADR testing. The air exchange rates only indicate the total volume of air that is processed by the air purifier at a time given and ignores the particles that are filtered or the overall effectiveness of air purifier. Make sure your air purifier has been tested and certified by the AHAM optimal CADR results to guarantee that you will receive an air purifier that has the ability to remove airborne contaminants, odors and fumes.

The air purifiers use different methods of filtration for neutralizing and cleaning air smells terrible inside. Activated carbon filters are the most widely used type of filter to remove gases, odors, and chemical toxins. The carbon that is contained in the activated carbon filters is basically charcoal. When charcoal is treated with oxygen, millions of tiny pores between carbon atoms are created, allowing the activated carbon to adsorb odorous substances from gases or liquids.

The term "absorb" refers to the process by which the material adheres to the coals through chemical attraction. Large areas with tiny pores of activated carbon to attract odors, gases and chemical toxins, and the pores trap these impurities. As the canister in the air is filled with pollutants, coal becomes less effective, it needs to be replaced. Impregnated carbon filters contain a chemical additional (one chemisorbent), which enables them to eliminate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors and fumes.

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, by definition, are required to filter at least 99.97% of all airborne particles as small of 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen and pet dander. However, the size, material and construction of HEPA filter media will determine the amount of particles being filtered. If the filter media is very small, some ultra-fine particles, such as bad smell and chemical fumes can be missed.

To address odor control, HEPA air purifiers usually combine the HEPA filter systems additional filtration. Manufacturers like Austin Air combine HEPA filtration technology with their own carbon / zeolite filter to effectively remove contaminants and persistent air smells and odors. The carbon / zeolite filter is impregnated with potassium iodide for the removal of improving chemically reactive gases, providing home with air that is free of allergens, toxins, and odors.

Charged media filters are also effective against odors. Using electrostatic energy and synthetic fiber filters, many charged media filters can collect particles as small as 0.1 microns. The filter of the media, made of synthetic fibers, is charged through the manufacturing process and electrostatically attracts pollutants in the air before catching them inside the fibers of the filter.

However, filters accused the media lose their charge frequently and become less effective after each use, requiring a filter replacement to regain efficiency. In fact, some filter media charges emit ozone, a dangerous lung irritant that pollutes air and should be avoided for allergy and asthma sufferers.

Some filter media charged as Blueair air purifiers offer optional smoke, odor, and gas extraction filters.
