If you can not move to Arizona or Nevada, or one of those famous areas clean dry air, then think of a residential air cleaner!
There are two basic options with air filters, a portable or central. However, that does not mean it's easy to choose an air cleaner is actually a topic quite thoroughly, which should be studied before actually purchasing an air filter.

Portable units are designed for single room application and often for specific contaminants as well. On this they may be more useful, for example, in a bedroom where the occupant can not sleep because to allergens. These units are available in a variety of different designs, each designed to clean air or gaseous pollutants. These pollutants include particles such as pollen, smoke and dust and gaseous substances such as odors and fumes.
Larger units would obviously be more efficient, but the manufacturer quotes the relevant factors to consider, such as room size, capacity of the unit, the air content and efficiency of the unit.
There is an area in which these units will not really help and that is in the toxic smells. The science has not yet found an effective way to recognize, capture and destroy these gases.
Another factor to remember is that when you are buying an air filter, you should always get a contract for maintenance or service. You can run the air filter even when not effective, but the frequency of maintenance which means you will be breathing clean air.
