Much has been written and said in the media recently about an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) commercial air purifier and an ozone generator. Unfortunately, as often happens during the media frenzy, the truth is lost amidst the generalizations, assumptions and poor reporting.
First Instead, what is ozone? Ozone (O3) is composed of 3 oxygen atoms and is considered a highly reactive gas. When a chemical reaction between the oxygen molecule diatomic (O2) and one oxygen atom (O) occurs, it forms the ozone layer. There is some confusion about "good ozone" and "bad" ozone. Ozone in the upper atmosphere is beneficial because it protects us from harmful UV rays. However, inhaling high concentrations of ozone is potentially dangerous to the lungs.
The major difference between ESP air cleaners and ozone generators is: ESP air cleaners produce small amounts of ozone as a byproduct of air cleaning process, ozone generators are built specifically to "intentionally" produce ozone.
With technology of electrostatic precipitator, small amounts of ozone are produced during the ionization process. This is radically different from ozone generators sold as air purifiers that do not improve indoor air quality, but they have large concentrations of potentially harmful ozone. To further confuse the issue, some Manufacturers of ozone generators use cute names to disguise the ozone layer, such as "saturated oxygen", "activated oxygen" and "air pure. "What really is is the ozone production, clean air.
Many have ozone generators ozone to be effective a germicide. A study the EPA concluded that ozone, even at concentrations almost 100 times the recommended limit for exposure human, was ineffective in killing airborne molds and fungi. The California Air Environmental Protection Agency Resources Board does not recommend the use of ozone generators.
Ozone generators have been advertised as being effective in eliminating odors from smoke snuff. A test conducted by Consumer Reports magazine found that this is false. A more effective and safer method for removing odors from smoke is to neutralize odor cartridge.
