How Does an Air Purifier Work?

Amidst the technological advancement nowadays, thus, new innovative machines have been launched, air purifiers have never lost their importance as far as their functions are concerned. They have been around for more than 200 years. It is well for a household to acquire a purifier to protect its members from airborne pollutants or allergens. Across the globe, there are millions of people suffer from asthma and allergies. These cases can be due to unsafe indoor air quality. Those sufferers must do something about it especially in finding ways on how to improve the quality of indoor air in their homes. Truly, air purifiers are a solution to this problem. In this article, we will discuss how an air purifier works.

The device efficiently works to filter pollutants and allergens that are seen or unseen by human eyes such as smoke, mold spores, pollen, bacteria, pollen, viruses, pet dander and the like. All of these are believed to be harmful to one’s lungs and immune system. In order for the purifier to remove these airborne allergens from the indoor air, filters, electrical attraction or ozone are used. Filtering of particles is done through the use of filter that is a wire mesh or a perforated metal. When air flows into the purifier, the particles are then trapped by the filter. The HEPA or High Efficiency Particulate Air filters have set the acceptable benchmark for air filters. This benchmark is said to be efficiently functional which can trap 99.97% of airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns. One micron is equivalent to 1/25,400 of an inch. This attests to the fact that a purifier can be able to trap particles that cannot be seen by the naked eyes of a human.

The more time the air passes through HEPA filters, the cleaner and safer the air becomes. There are some brands of purifier that feature an optional medical grade ultra- violet (UV) light system that works effectively for quickly killing viruses, bacteria and fungi as they pass through the filter. Additionally, ultra- violet light is used to fight against biological and viral contamination that attacks the HEPA filter. Since we have already discussed air filters, let us now talk about ionic purifiers. An ionic purifier works differently from air filters. It uses a process called corona discharge which is responsible for the creation of charged molecules called ions. As the indoor air passes through the purifier, the airborne particles will stick to the ions which cause them to get heavier and thus they will not be able to pass through the filter. This type of purifiers works more effectively against particles and pollutants than trapping gases, chemicals or odors.

Another type of air purifier is the ozone generator which works much like an ionizing purifier. It uses an electricity to convert oxygen into ozone. It is known for its ability to deodorize and disinfect the air. Hence, this is a point still being debated. Moreover, there have been some health problems reported that are allegedly caused by ozone generator due to its toxic gas. Another bad thing about this purifier is that it can cause corrosion and oxidation of metals. These are the three basic types of purifier. Others include electric static purifier and those that use absorbent materials.
