UV Rays and Eye Problems

Too much UVA exposure has been linked to cataracts – clouding of the lens that blocks light from reaching the retina and therefore reduces vision. If left untreated, cataract blindness occurs. UVA also has been linked to macular degeneration – a deterioration of the central area of the retina that gives us the perception of color and our sharpest vision in bright light conditions. Degeneration Macular also causes total blindness.

The cornea blocks most UVB radiation from the sun, protecting the lens and retina damage. But too much exposure to UVB can cause growths called pingueculae. They are pieces of yellow on the sclera (white) near the cornea. They usually appear in older people, but depending on how exposure to the sun there can be found in young people and even children. Dry, dust and wind can inflamed, causing pain and redness.

In some cases, lead to pingueculae pterygium, which are wedge-shaped growths that can extend to the right in the cornea and directly affect the view. They are very visible to others, affecting their overall facial appearance.

Damage from the sun in the eyes is cumulative. That makes it important to protect the eyes of their children so that they reach middle age their vision could be free from these problems.
