How often has to change a HEPA filter in air filtration device, for allergies?

So my boyfriend and I decided you should get the Ionic Pro, which is similar to the Ionic breeze. That seem to make sense because we had no need to buy filters for ever. But as soon as we turned it on, my BF started to feel dizzy and chest pains. We have investigated and discovered that air cleaners emit ozone ionic type, which can irritate its passage lung and asthma. So we went back the next day. We are thinking of getting a HEPA air but do not know what the best offer … plus the cost of filters – the room seems to collect dust until after cleaning. And we suffer from allergies to dust, even after we cleaned it ..: / How often change the HEPA filter in your air filter?
