Cleaning HEPA air purifier??

I just purchased a Honeywell air purifier off craigslist.com. It works fine, but gives subtle smell of the house she bought it. It bothers me! Online ads for air purifier say they do not replace the filters, but simply washing. How I do this? Just run under water?

Running the HEPA filter with hot tap water and let dry preferably where it can get air on both sides the filter does not dry in the sun that can damage the filter, it is best in a warm room, can be dried in a dishdrainer if possible in this way the air is achieved both parties and dries quickly without promoting mildew Good Luck!
