What is the best way to clean an air purifier with a metal filter?

Oreck XL is a professional with a metal filter that never needs replacing. I bought the cleaning solution to sell, but I wonder if there is anything else I can use? I need something that will be stuck in the garbage (mostly smoke I think cigarettes) out of metal. Just in case anyone else has some experience with one. Thank you!
