Taking stable and sharp photos is hard in some situations. For example, take a picture with high-zoom lenses even the tiniest camera movement will result in a blurred picture. The reason that the blurriness is that while the shutter is open and the photo is being captured and the camera moves the image sensor also moves to lose its sharpness. The image stabilizer helps solve the problem, here is how.

The best solution for the camera movements, of course, to eliminate the movements. Sometimes this can be accomplished by using a tripod or place the camera on a stable surface when taking the photo. However, in many situations it is impossible to fully stabilize the camera – for example, by taking pictures of objects at high zoom fast.

When removal of movement is not possible other solutions that can be used instead of preventing the movement to compensate and prevent symptoms: blurred photos. These solutions also are known as image stabilizers.

There are many different implementations of image stabilizers and many manufacturers to keep secret the details of implementation to prevent competitors from copying it. An implementation of image stabilization can be divided into two: the detection of movement and compensation for it. Discovery is the mechanism that detects that the camera moves during the filming of a picture. Clearing is the mechanism that compensates for motion detection to prevent movement symptoms.

There are two common ways to implement image stabilizers (sometimes known as mechanical image stabilizers for the implementation mechanical property), a floating lens element or a motion sensor.

Floating lens element: An element is added lenses usually in the form of a compensation lens. This element is "floating" on the lenses and can move left, right, up and down. Gyros lenses are placed in – or micro gyro sensors or equivalent. When the camera moves gyros detect motion and send a signal to the floating lens to move in the right direction to compensate for the movement. Moving the lens corrects the angle at which light strikes the image sensor to compensate for the movement.

Moving sensor: The sensor is a chip behind the lens that converts the light reflected from it to the digital pixels. When motion is detected the sensor is a bit moved in the opposite direction to compensate. Gyro sensors or equivalent may be used to detect the movements of the stabilizer though many use a processor DSP analyzes the image in real time sensor to detect the movements that eliminates the need for other mechanical part

The advantages of stabilizers such as: get sharper photos, while virtually eliminates blur in common scenarios. Detectors based sensors work very well in low light, which detect the actual physical movement, while the DSP processor based detection is less effective in low light situations and more prone errors. Disadvantages include added cost, weight and size of the camera as a result of mechanical movement.
